Metallic Quartz Dragon Sculpture

Description

Here it is! My newest detailed dragon! Finally, for the first time in six months, I made a dragon for myself. I am so incredibly happy with this dragon. There are some major improvements from my first detailed dragon, like more realistic wings, a longer neck, neater scales and a more serpentine body. I also made the legs out of Sculpey Firm, which helped quite a bit. I've always wanted to make a dragon with quartz crystals for all the spikes and horns. There are silver accents all over him, but my camera ate up a lot of the colors. I ordered glass eyes for this one, because I don't like how little the eyes are on my other big dragons. The only problem I had with this dragon were those darn wings. First, I tried making them out of air dry clay, and they looked great until they shrunk and fell off. Then, I tried making them out of Super Sculpey, but they were too heavy and both wings snapped off sideways, After cutting and peeling off the failed wings, I repaired the wing fingers, and decided to try some kind of cloth or linen. I found this nice shimmery stuff, and it went on perfectly. So next time, I'll either build stronger wing armature and use clay, or just keep using this nice cloth. Ahh, it feels good to lavish time on big dragons.

Completion time: about 45-50 hours.

Size: 12" high, 11" long

Materials: Super Sculpey, Sculpey firm, wire, tin foil, Createx Paints, black cloth, quartz crystals and Liquitex High Gloss Finish.

Beautiful dragon!  I love the way you incorporated the crystals.  Have you ever thought of making the wings from liquid sculpy or a combo of liquid sculpy and the softer sculpy? BTW, what's his/her name?
